Mesh Wi-Fi vs. extenders: what I actually install
Extenders are cheap, and that's the only thing going for them.
Why I avoid extenders
An extender repeats the signal it receives, using the same airwaves. That typically cuts speed significantly and often creates a second network name that devices cling to.
What I install
A mesh system, with nodes placed where signal is still strong, and connected by Ethernet where the house allows it. A wired connection between nodes is the single biggest upgrade to a mesh.
Before buying anything
- Move the router to a central, open location.
- Get it off the floor and out of cabinets.
- Check for a cheap fix like a firmware update or channel conflict.
When one router is enough
A small home or apartment rarely needs mesh at all. Buy the coverage you need, not the box that's on sale.
